It’s official, Nigeria’s minister Amina Mohammed is UN Deputy Secretary-General
Nigeria’s Amina Mohammed and current Minister of Environment, has been announced as the United Nations (UN) Deputy Secretary-General.The announcement was reportedly made on Thursday by the new UN Secretary-General, António Guterres through his spokesman, Mr. Stephane Dujarric.
The new UN Secretary-General also appointed Ms. Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti of Brazil as his Chef De Cabinet, adding that he had the intention to create the position of Special Advisor on Policy and to appoint Ms. Kyung-Wha Kang of the Republic of Korea to the new role.
The news of Amina’s appointment was unofficially reported recently before the Presidency doused the report and promised to make it public to Nigerians as soon as it was announced officially.
The Nigerian government had also stated that she would keep performing her functions as a minster until such a time she puts in her resignation.
The new UN Deputy Secretary-General was UN Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser to the former Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon on Post-2015 Development Planning.

Guterres while taking the oat of office on Monday had said, “I think that one very important element of the agenda would be to give a clear signal that gender parity is a must ….
“And the first ones would be announced soon. You’ll see that gender parity will become a clear priority from top to bottom in the UN and it will have to be respected by all.”
